Sgt. Gordon Edward Carden

Early Life

Gordon was born in 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Carden of Wood View, Weybridge and later of the Ship Hotel.

Mr. Carden was Assistant Contracts Manager at a branch of Vickers having spent the previous ten years at their Weybridge factory.

At school Gordon was a keen sportsman. He represented the school at cricket, rugby and football.

Gordon followed in his fathers footsteps and worked at Vickers in Weybridge.

World War 2

In September 1940 Gordon volunteered for the RAFVR and went to America where he learned to fly. Whilst in training his nickname was 'Oaf'.

He received his operational training at 19 OTU, RAF Kinloss in Scotland.

On 26 May 1942 he was killed in a flying accident. He was aboard Master 1 (serial number N7882) operating from 59 OTU, RAF Wreay near Carlisle when it crashed. Sgt. H. H. Wray was also killed.

Gordon is buried at Addlestone Burial Ground, Surrey (Sec. 23, Grave 33). He was jsut 20 years old when he died.
